MS Excel 2007 vs OOo Calc 2.3: A real world speed analysis
Open Office Calc is often thought to be very slow in opening spreadsheets, while MS Excel is thought to be fast. The time taken by both applications to startup from cold boot and subsequently open spreadsheets of varying sizes was measured. Excel was faster to load blank files and very large files, but Calc was found faster for opening small files
